Holy Saturday

In the town of Corfu:07:00 at the Church of the Holy Virgin ‘Faneromenis’ , in St Spyridon’s Square, the Re-enaction of the Earthquake.

09:00. Procession of the Venerable Body of Saint Spiridon. This event is the oldest of the four processions of the island’s Patron Saint, and commemorates his miraculous delivery of the island from famine.

11:00. “First Resurrection”. Church bells ring out, and in Corfu the local residents hurl clay pots out of their windows onto the streets and alleyways, accompanied by Philharmonic Bands.

22:00. Pentofanaro – Arrival of the Holy Light.

24:00. The Resurrection Mass.

Easter

Easter is the most significant religious day for all Greeks, but its celebration in the Ionian Islands is a unique experience. Various components such as the Orthodox Christian faith, pagan traditions, the music of the philharmonic bands come together harmoniously composing a dazzling picture. A huge number of visitors travel to island to experience the religious traditions of the Holly week with the Resurrection day as the climax of the celebrations.
